New Exhaust on my Macan Turbo
New Exhaust on my Macan Turbo
As others have noticed, the Macan Turbo's exhaust note is a disappointment. I'm sure the newly spec-able PSE will be an improvement, but too late for mine, which was completed 8/20 and arrived at my dealer a week ago.
I thought hard about the aftermarket exhausts now available from shops like Fabspeed and GMG but thought the videos were a bit too aggressive for what I was looking for.
So I designed my own from readily-available exhaust supplier parts and had it installed yesterday.
In addition, I have an opinion about tonal quality of the exhaust note: the shape of the exhaust tip is critical. If you think about a trumpet's bell, the clear crisp tone is inducing by the perfectly symmetrical flare of the trumpet's bell. So I did not reuse the trapezoidal-shaped OEM exhaust tips (which I always thought were ugly anyway) and replaced them with round, double, flared stainless steel tips.
The biggest improvement is at startup, idle and rev-up. A nice baritone exhaust note. At cruising speed, there is a subtle but noticeable note in the cabin as the PDK gearshifts change, but no annoying drone. The pops & burbles on throttle roll-off is definitely enhanced.
As for WOT (I'm only pushing it up to about 4,500 RPMs, as I have less than 400 miles on it), it sounds rather docile in the cabin.....almost like nothing has changed. Of course, I do have the Sound and Thermal Insulated Glass option.
This weekend I'll enlist some help from my son to shoot some launches and drive-bys, as well as from inside the cabin.
I'm pretty satisfied with what we did.
For now, here's one video of it starting up and backing into the garage:
