2006 SL65 Wide Body Conversion in Pictures
We use a local subcontractor who actually only does this part time. Like I've said before, we have tried to push him to do this full time.
He does great work and is meticulous and very **** about his work...which is great for us.

Gauge bezel/cowl in CF

Rear wing mock-up...it'll be in CF with steel posts threaded into the wing and fastened into the rear trunk.

Brembo BBK...

Pic of how the rear bumper diffuser will look...we have the new tips but rear diffuser needs to be reshaped for the openings of the new exhaust tips. After reshaping it will be converted to CF.

Man this project is dragging...it's been a year now. There will be a come to Jesus meeting with the upholsterer on Monday. He's great at what he does but he's slow as molasses right now...
He's a one man shop and to be honest with you I just don't think the SL is a priority...taking smaller jobs to make ends meet...I'm open to paying on a weekly basis based on hours worked but for some reason he's unable to do it that way.
We are about to move on if Monday doesn't go well...
Here's the update:
1. All of the interior panels and roll cage are done except for the seats and door panels...which we might be done by someone else if Monday goes bad. The carbon fiber bits are all ready to go on...the interior will get put together on Monday sans seats and door panels.
2. The rear wing is now CF and will be done after this weekend (final clear coat and polishing). We have the metal fabricator all ready to go for the metal posts for the rear wing...final wing angle and fitment will start next week.
3. Brembo brakes are on and wheels will get on last.
4. The steering wheel/sun visors is done and ready to ship back...the air bag will be dyed to match the leather wrap...the CF portion of the steering wheel was kept.

BEFORE:
The rear wing came back from CF conversion. They are test fitting it for the correct angle...the pics below show them with temporary pedestals. The actual pedestals will be aluminum posts (done with a bit of flair though). They will be threaded into the bottom of the wing which have special plates fixed under the CF layer. For our purposes, the lower the height the better but with an aggressive angle that will look good and may actually be functional (you can only hope...
.
The CF on the wing is impeccable. I can't wait for the new rear diffuser to come back from CF treatment so we can visually balance the back end...having a CF wing and not doing the rear diffuser wouldn't look right (well at least to us). The diffuser you see in the pics is the Revozport diffuser I had on the original build...I changed it to a newer version (pic of it is in earlier post but in satin black)...I just didn't think the Revozport looks right with the new look so we made the change...
The Rotiform will go on as the last thing to go on (they will look spectacular) but the Brembro BBK are already on. A lot of small trim details still need to go on the exterior...like CF trim badging, CF SL63 side mirrors, front CF spoiler lip, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something...
The interior reassembly trudges on next week...the back panels and the pop roll bar pieces are in house and going in. The door panels and seats (I can't wait for those since they will be redone in a more Aston Martin style) are next to be done.
Once the aesthetics are done...I plan to drive her for at least the end of the year and then it'll go to Switzer Performance for beta testing. It'll be a test bed for some performance modifications...standalone ECU (Syvecs), flex fuel, better cooling, better traction (dealing with wheel slippage), and yeah...more hp/tq. Goal is 1000whp...it can be done power wise but doing it with usability and reliability is also the goal. Can it be done? Not sure but it'll be fun to see what happens.

I stopped by the shop to see how the reassembly was going...
- Seats are at upholsterer and are all apart...we went over the patterns of the seats so we were on the same page. Not going with typical MB look...not over the top just different.
- The rear diffuser is at the body shop getting the exhaust openings reshaped to fit the new exhaust dual exhaust tip shape...then carbon fiber gets applied
- All new vents were installed
- Door panels are still awaiting for the top CF door spears to be redone
- The CF side mirrors and front center splitter will probably be the last thing to put on...
- The final stance will get set once everything is on the car...it sits too low in the rear and too high up front
- The final fabrication of the wing posts are ongoing...we did preliminary testing of the angle of the wing today...probably need 12-15 degree shims to make it look right. Final fabrication of the posts will be seamless as far as noticing the incorporated shims.

The seats are done with a twist...we decided to have the backs done in carbon fiber. They are plastic anyway and not a really difficult job. We were going with black Ferrari split hide but there is a wait on supply of it so we decided to take the CF route. The rear wing is done too...I'll have pics mid week of both.
The rear bumper had to be removed to get the old Revozport CF diffuser off to get the reworked Prior Design diffuser on and test fitted with the new exhaust openings. Below is the roughed out exhaust openings...there will be an additional brow above the exhaust tips to give it a more finished look. Once we test fit it at the body shop then the diffuser gets the carbon fiber treatment to balance out the CF rear wing. It just wouldn't look right being just in satin black the way it was originally.
