S-Class or LS460??????
My parents had a lease on a new S-class which they ended up having someone else take over and bought a LS460L (they are in love with Lexus due to owning a few with no problems what so ever and an extremely smooth ride). You will get the most out of your money with the LS and if you were planning on keeping it for the longrun I'd go with the LS. Neither of them are really a bad choice, the build quality of the new S-classes are significantly better than the previous generation and you really can't go wrong with either car, it just depends on what you want. I personally would choose an LS because of the price, quality, features, and I don't really care too much about status and image. Goodluck and you won't be disappointed with either! Just check them both out and take them out on test drives.
I'm a real estate developer and I drive a truck to work everyday so I could care less about the "status" of driving a MB. But on the other hand, I want a car that I can drive into the ground and 7 or 8 years later still possibly be driving. I'm going to buy the car new and I won't worry about depreciation because when I let her go, there won't be much to trade in.
I guess I have answered my own question, the wife will get the LS.

You cant go wrong with the LS. Both are great cars.
For me it was which one offerd more bang for the $$$.
I would suggest if you are going for the standard wheel base, opt for the one in the 73K MSRP range. That way you get the adv. parking, mark levinson audio with the hard drive, etc.

IMO, the LS is the most technologically advanced mass produced car you can buy. If that has any value to you, then LS. If it's looks and status you're after, S-Class. Of course this all goes out the window if you're considering an S65, in which case there isn't a car that you should choose before it.
Hands down LS460L or the LS460 if the wind noise issue is fixed for the 08's. Wind noise is not a problem on the LS460L only the LS460, dealers are swapping out glass from the 460L as a fix.
I just sold my LS430 to get into a LS460 not the L, but I am waiting for confirmation on the fix for the 08's. About the best $75k you can blow, because after all most cars are worthless 5 years later.

OMG, I just went through this whole debate with my wife. The result however, was not EXACTLY what I expected. Long story, re-told in a narrative manner to follow...
This happened this past Friday (we get every other Friday off where we work).
Wife: I'm bored, let's go do something.
Me: Hey, let's go look at cars, we haven't done that in a while.
Wife: Yeah right
, but okay, what are we going to go look at?
Me: How about an LS460? I hear they're really nice cars.
Wife: I don't like them. I don't really want to look at a Lexus.
Me: Whatever. Let's just go.
<We go to the local Lexus dealership and check out an LS460; I really wanted to check out an LS460L, so I don't bother with the test drive. Then as we are leaving the dealership...>
Wife: That was actually a really nice car, but it came across as a really fancy Toyota.
Me: Okay, what now?
Wife: We should go look at an S550 to get a back-to-back comparison.
<Off to the Mercedes dealership we go... Then as I'm in the dealership, checking out this S550, I hear her calling me.>
Wife: Hey, get over here, you have to check this out!
Me: Now what?
<I wander over to where she is standing, and I get about 20 feet from the front of the car she is looking at and just stop in my tracks.>
Me: Holy ****, that's a CLK63 AMG convertible! I didn't even know they had one at this dealership!
Wife: I really like this one. I have always wanted one of these convertibles.
Me: But you know that this has...
Wife: Yeah, I know, the new AMG motor <blah, blah, blah - she is repeating the mantra I have been spouting about these cars while I walk around the car>
<And here folks, is the biggest tactical error I made that day.>
Me: If there were one car I would buy today, it would be this one.
Wife: I think I want to test drive the car. Do me a favor, and drop the E320 (which we are giving to our youngest son, therefore the sedan replacement search) off at the house and bring the truck back.
Me: Yes dear.
<At this point, I realized I had totally lost control of the situation. I went home, got the truck, and in the fog that was clouding my mind, all I could think was "WTF, what is going on here?">
So now we have this Cadet Blue CLK63 sitting in the garage.
Oh, if it were my choice between the S550 and the LS460, I would choose the S550, but it's a little late for that now in my world...
