I'd go with a 104 or a 111 depending on if you want an auto or a manual wind. Those are nice base models which are cheap and easy to sell later.

The 196 lists for $6,150. I would have to find out about the bracelet for you. I also need to see how much off I can get on it through Panerai but your discount would be 10-15% and no tax and the cost of the bracelet. PAM bracelets are not cheap though.

Just wanna add that I bought the PAM126 from Stryke couple weeks ago and the transaction went very smooth and great service. It's my first Panerai and I'm very impressed with it...it looks every bit as good as my SS Daytona sitting next to each other, now I just need to find the time to actually wear it!
