I have the following:
2x Panasonic TH-50PX50U
2x Panasonic TH-50PM50U
1x Pioneer PDP-5060HD
1x Pioneer PDP-5050HD/SX
1x Pioneer PDP-5040HD
1x LG 50PY2DR
As you can see I love both Panasonic and Pioneer. I picked up the LG about 8 months ago because it had the most incredible looking cabinet to it. Also, it had a built in DVR that supports HDTV with CableCard. While the image quality on the LG is not up to par of the Panny or Pioneer it actually is not that bad, and with the features and look the cabinet had, I made it a centerpiece is my living room.
My background is video engineering, I had a tech company in the 1990's that specialized in video/audio compression and related technologies. I was working on HDTV back in 1990 before they were compressing the video, talk about serious hi def! Anyway, it is in my blood to go completely overboard on video equipment.
I find myself torn between the Panasonic and Pioneer. Panasonic still has the better blacks and overall more natural picture. But, the Pioneer with its deep cell encased structure has better overall color accuracy and a sharper 'perceived' image. I don't think the image is any sharper but the gaps between each pixel has the effect of making the human eye think the image is sharper. This is actually somwhat of a problem with diagonal lines which appear 'choppy'. The Panasonic image is more fluid in comparison. Ultimately both are fantastic TV's.

Michael,
You should check out some of the Panny commercial units and get it ISF calibrated. Blacks are just as good, and the colors are as good as the Pio units.
I am surprised you haven't got a NEC or Fujitsu?

Jarod,
Most of these TV's went into rooms where I didn't want to set up a speaker system, I wanted the simplicity of built in speakers, and for some I wanted the built in tuners so that I could just run cable to them.
The Panny commercial units have the same exact plasma screen as the consumer units, you should be able to ISF calibrate the consumers just as well as the commercials. We used the commercial sets for trade shows at my old tech company, they are great when you don't need all of the extra bells and whistles.
NEC and Fujitsu have their pluses and minuses. I love deep blacks and I have never seen an NEC or Fujitsu with the blacks of a Panasonic. I also think the pricing is out of line on them. I understand the technologies involved and most of the NEC and Fujitsu magic is in the processing, the actual panels leave a lot to be desired. Hitachi uses Fujitsu panels in its consumer models and I think the Hitachi plasma's look like crap. Ditto for the Pioneer PDP-4214 which uses NEC glass. What I think would be an awesome combo is taking the NEC or Fujitsu processing engine and mating it with Pioneer or Panasonic glass.

I just wanted to let the 6speed community know that Michael delivered my 50 inch Plasma on Wednesday. The internet is a funny thing and trust is of the utmost importance. Michael experienced some issues with the shipper and took it upon himself to get a private driver to take care of it. I was very impressed and he maintained email/phone contact the whole way. I would not hesitate to buy from him again and I think his credibility is the highest possible we could have on this forum when it comes to buying/selling merchandise. Truly a class act. Michael, thank you again and I am already eyeballing some of the other TV's you have for sale...you may get a call from me...take care...
