Looking for a better stock glass than the kit lens for the d40, I want one for shooting sports ( MMA Fighting) and one for normal everyday shooting, maybe a prime lens? any prices welcome

 

I have the 18-55mm that came with my D50, nice lens, I just got a deal on an 18-135mm so I jumped at the chance to upgrade.

 

My kit lens is about the same, they say better.

 

Okie dokie. When I got by D50 I was told the 18-55mm was much better than the other kit lens, wasn't sure what came with the D40.

If I can talk myself in to buying an 18-200mm VR I'll be selling an 18-135mm and Sigma 70-300mm soon.

 

The 18-55 that is on the D40 and the D50 are optically the same, The D40 kit lens just has a smaller zoom ring....

Just FYI The D40 is not compatable with most lenses as it does not have pin driven focusing... your only lens selections are Nikon made AF-S lenses... Meaning you can put the lens on the D40 and meter but it will not autofocus.... That being said there are no current prime lenses that will autofocus on the 40..... For sports type shooting your best bet would be a faster aperature lens..... so your only options are the 17-55 2.8 or a 70-200 2.8... Big dollars....

If I were you I would look at upgrading the body to a D80, this will allow you to shoot higher ISO's without noise, so you will not have to invest big dollars in lenses... You will also have 110% more lens choices....

I have an 18-70, 24-85, and a 28-200 all that are AF-S and will work on your D40 I would need $245 shipped for any of them they all have boxes/ paperwork/hoods... All US

 

I just read that the lens with the D40 is actually better as they improved the focus motor, other than that they're the same. I'm on the lookout for a deal to upgrade to a D80 (from D50), then again I also want an 18-200mm VR lens... and a fisheye lens... and...

Damned cameras, it's like a black hole for $$$!
