PSM and ABS randomly appear

on my 996tt

My initial thoughts were that I may have a loose ABS sensor or something. I took it to my friends shop and he said they were all fine. From research on this board this may be due to incorrect tire sizes.

I'm currently running a 295/30/19 in the rear and 235/35/19 up front. My rear is about an inch greater in diameter from stock which i pressume could trip the PSM, right? It seems there are others on the board running the same size but I haven't seen too many complaints.

Anyways, I'm looking to see if someone local is willing to let me borrow their stock rims or maybe something closer to stock dimensions for a short period of time to troubleshoot my issue. I guess I could let you borrow my 19" Champions in exchange if you really want them.

I just need to know if this is the cause of my PSM/ABS light before I go out and drop a lot of change on a new set of rubber. I litterally just picked up these 295's a couple months ago!

Any help/input would be much appreciated!!!

Did you search Rennlist or Retech?

I'm in Silver Spring and have a full set of stock twisties with Toyo 888's I use for the track. You are more than welcome to test run these.

Gunther - I really do appreciate your help but it looks like Scott is a tad closer to me.

Scott - I will contact you once my car gets out of the shop.

Thank you!

I'm fairly certain it's the MAF or the connector. If the connection to your MAF is bad you will receive a PSM & ABS warning.

Disconnect your battery then check the connection (while your at it clean the MAF) reconnect everything - hook up the negative on the battery and see if all is well.

I ran those sizes on my lowered 996 and had zero issues gathered with aggresive offsets.

That's good to know. The car is at the shop right now and will be scanned on Monday, hopefully they'll be able to pull codes and pin-point the problem then. If not, I will definitely give this a shot!

Its def the MAF, I ran similar sizes on mine and never had a problem. There is also a cheaper place than the dealer online to buy the MAF. It will save you a good $200 and they take all of 10 min to install. You can try to clean it but generally a temporary fix.

Thanks a lot!

That place quoted me $215 for the MAF.

From what I recall the dealer wanted $788?! Maybe they got their numbers mixed up...

HA! It's funny how dealers always get their numbers mixed up so that it's consistently MORE expensive rather than less.

Just got word from the shop. Apparently I have two faulty sensors that need replacement; a steering angle sensor and a speed sensor up front.

They said no codes appeared pointing to the MAF.

Has your steering wheel come off at any point for any reason? i.e. aftermarket wheel installed, custom LED lights for a radar detector on the dash, etc? No parking lot fender-benders that would have caused your suspension geometry to be way off? And the car wasn't driven BEFORE getting an alignment after putting on new springs or coil-overs?

If the answer to all of that is no then you probably do have a faulty steering sensor, but if you've done suspension work and they drove the car to the alignment after install it may just need to be reset - I've seen it a number of times. Good luck!

Apparently the sensor itself was broken, possibly from hitting debris on road? I don't know...

They want $1k parts and labor for both sensors to be replaced. Does that sound reasonable?
