MINI Cooper S/JCW engines deliver power in regular pulsations that are ameliorated by the mass of a flywheel. Further dampening of vibration and noise isolation is made possible by a dual-mass flywheel design, whereby two flywheels are mated together by a circumferential spring.

When positive clutch feel and shifting precision are higher priorities, minimizing any buffering between the engine crankshaft and transmission is imperative.
