Question Convertible Top Problems

I purchased a used 2006 Mini Cooper S convertible 2 weeks ago. I love the car but, yesterday my convertible top stopped closing 6 inches from closed and won't work in either direction. I waited for 30 minutes for the motor to cool down. No luck. I tried it this morning. Again no luck. I was able to use an allen wrench to close the top. I am looking for any clues as to where to start troubleshooting the problem.

Thanks.

Are you talking about the front of the roof being locked to the frame? Or when close the roof on the sunroof function which is also used when closing the top?

Not sure how the top works on the Mini, but I had a similar problem in a Benz. The cables had apparently stretched over the life and I had to manually push the frame up..once it was past a certain point it would close with no difficulty.

I had the top up with the sunroof open. When I went to close the sunroof, it closed about halfway and stopped. After that it would not move either way, open or closed. I was able to close it manually but it doesn't move at all now.

Click Here for the convertible top cables.

Sounds like convertible cables snapped on one side near the front latch. You replace them in a set.

That will get your top to slide sunroof function to slide all the way back. If you can hear the motor running and nothing else moving, its the cables.

Some owner replace the hardware and front latches once they have the cables out since they are taking everything apart.

Hope that helps.

Simple Fix

Thank you all for your help. I finally had enough time off of work without rain to troubleshoot the problem and it turned out to be a blown fuse. I seem to remember that the simplest solution is usually the first place to start. However, if I keep blowing fuses then I might be back for more advice.

It might have blown a fuse due to the top being hung up and over-stressed the motor. I would check the cables and make sure that the rail are lubricated, they can get dirt in there and stop.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks
