the power steering motor on my rack had an issue so i changed it, now it is working sporadically and not properly, does it need to be programmed at the dealer?

Whats chassis do have? Sounds like you are talking about a Gen 1 R52 2008 Convertible since it has the separate motor from the rack.

Gen 2 R56 + have the power steering rack with integrated motor.

Thanks

The whole unit comes with the electronic motor attached. And should not require programming.

I would check the electrical connections at the unit itself. And also check you battery voltage , when they battery is on its way out , there can be intermediate functions in the electrical system.
Do you have a steering wheel symbol with exclamation point showing up on the tach display?

Thanks

Yes the exclamation mark is there. And the dealer says the rack/motor is shot. They wanted like 2500 so I got a used complete unit. But I'm wondering if it will need to be programmed at the dealer, maybe steering angle sensor reset or something after I change it. Any idea?

Is the exclamation point still there? I did not know you had a used unit.

On using a used unit, I don't have much info on that , I know new ones are replaceable without reprogram. All I could figure is that it has stored points in the steering angle sensor. I would also check those connections, its possible there is a problem there since its on and off.

Might be worth it now since you have a used one to hook it up and see what it reads.

Thanks
