Transmission/diff whine

Something has started to whine with a pitch that goes up and down with speed, not engine revs. Loudest when going at a constant speed, not accelerating or decelerating.
Sounds like it's coming from the front, but my diagnosis skills are legendary for being bad.
Any good recommendations for a reliable transmission shop to check it out? I'm located near Sacramento.
