No front plate ticket...

Just curious if anyone knows the fine for not having a front license plate. I knew the consequences, and can't really complain as I've been pretty fortunate so far, but for the first time ever, I was finally pulled over for this reason alone on a quiet Sunday evening in Redmond and was hit with a $216 penalty, not to mention the $550 no proof of insurance because I couldn't find my card in time. (looking through my glove box but forgot it was in my wallet , and he wouldn't allow me to show proof of insurance on my iPhone. Anyway, I thought it was a $35 fix it ticket? When the state trooper passed me going the opposite direction I could see his eyes light up, and then he literally lit up, basically pulled an illegal U-turn and went at least 20mph over the limit to get me.

Now to vent a little, I could tell right away when his eyes lit up he was on an agenda, and I wasn't going to be getting any slack by his questioning, despite being polite, cooperative, and honest. First he asks if this is my car, then starts to question me on my last name , giving me the impression that he is under the suspicion that the car is stolen, then goes into some B.S. about how people aren't mounting front plates to avoid some new camera technology that can catch speeders and car thieves, especially on nicer cars. (i have a clean record) And then he starts saying that if my car were ever to be stolen they will be able to recover it quicker because of this new technology. But I know better as my previous car WAS stolen and had a front plate, and the police basically told me to start looking for a new car.

Anyway, the law is the law and I have no problem paying the penalty, but $216 seems excessive for no front plate? I already went into the courthouse and showed my proof of insurance, and I should be able to get the front plate penalty reduced, just a hassle anyway.

Thanks for listening

Geez, that really sucks! Sorry to hear this. Did you have the front plate with you by any chance? Is that considered a moving violation?

Fight the ticket.....show up in court with your insurance and a picture of your car with the front plate on it.

If you want you can go to the police station with your ticket and ask an officer to sign it showing thier observance of the plate installed.

I remember getting one in Bellevue a few years back but, I don't remember it being that high................it is an officer boredum ticket.

^^ I always felt that it's better to have no plate than to have it on the dash. If you have it on the dash, that's just screaming "I know I am supposed to have a front plate, but I'd rather just partially follow the rules" to me. On the other hand, if you have a new car w/ no drilled holes for a plate and no front plate, cops don't notice as often (IMO)

Thanks for all the feedback. I already went to the courthouse this afternoon and took care of the insurance issue, and already did the written mitigation. Hopefully they'll knock it down some, but my main concern was the insurance. If I ever get into another situation, I'll remeber to call you first Jags

I'm not sure if this is considered a moving violation or not? Traffic was checked on the ticket, but I would think this is a non-traffic violation? But no, I didn't have my plate with me, but honestly I don't think he would have cared.

Thanks Silversurfer. I'm surprised you saw me pull in with the crowd gathered around you haha. Was working my way towards your car just as you were exiting...and got a good show! Hope to see your CGT and other cars at future gatherings.

no front plate is not a moving violation. i got a ticket while parked on the street. in ca, you can get it signed off by an officer (any local PD) if you have the front plate mounted. this reduces your fine to $10 or $15 in SF.

That sucks. I have looked into no-holes options for mounting the front plate but they won't work with my parktronic sensors and Blinder system mounted in my grill.

$225 is pretty steep just for a no plate violation. I think we all need to sign the petition to remove the front license plate requirement for WA state http://www.petitiononline.com/wafrtplt/petition.html
