Fifty Years of Math 1959 - 2009:
Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl
took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my
pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3
pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her
discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she
hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to
her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Because of the
evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

Ok, so I don't totally agree with the OP but...
I was recently studying some semi-advanced finance "stuff" in Switzerland at the Swiss Banking Institute. It amazes me how very far behind we (the USA) are in terms of math and science.
It made me feel "bad" but I didn't quite resort to 2009 in the post above.
After some Gluwine and Chocolate, everything was right in the world.

Sore subject with me as my kids come home with math that is SOOOO STUPID ! ! !
they teach kids to subtract using some form of "all addition" so the slow kids "get it" then they teach multiplication of large numbers by using some square all chopped up into blocks where you imput some wierd *** sequence of numbers and come up with an addition problem to solve it....
WAIT
What was wrong with just teaching it the "regular way" and those kids that dont get it.... take them aside and give them a little "one on one" till they do get is....NOOOO we will dumb it down, complicate it, spin it in the food prossesor and spit it out all jumbled up so no one gets it EXCEPT the slow kids!!
