De-register a car?

I have a car that will be off the roads for many many months (maybe up to a year). To not have to pay tabs for the car, I'm assuming I have to go to the DOL and return the plates and fill out some forms? Couldn't find anything useful on their site about this.

Is there a way to just keep my plates but not renew the tabs until I put it back on the road? Pretty sure if I don't do anything they'll just back charge me for the tabs if I let them lapse.

Thanks for any input on the matter!

Simply don't renew. They have no way to charge you. I forgot about my tabs once and went a month over. They don't have your credit card on file.

Right but let's say they expire today and then 8 months from now I decided it's time to get the car back on the road...I think I'll still end up paying for the past 8 months (IOW, I would pay for a full year and the tabs would only be good for 4 months).
