Porsche sport exhaust

Can someone give me a better understanding of how the sport exhaust system works? I understand that you are opening/closing valves but not really sure where they are located. If you change x pipe/mufflers do you lose the ability to switch it?

Arent they located in the tips of the muffler ? Those vacum valves ? I have the regular exhaust , in which the valves open only when they accumulate vacum in order to build back preassure . I can disconect them and keep it open all the time to be loud but according to porsche I would lose some response and power in town . PSE should be the same and you open this valves with the button in the center console .

The valves are near the mufflers similar to this: http://shop.fvd.de/picture.php?VID=6...7005040s_2.jpg

I'm not sure the "regular" non-PSE has valves.

Yes it does : http://m.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-PORSCH...772?nav=SEARCH

I dont have the pse option and I have seen them . One thing I do not understand is besides the downpipes when you remove the catalycs , how does tuners pretend to add horsepower with a catback system when most of them look similar to the oem system ?

If so then how does Porsche justify selling PSE after the fact? There must be 2 part numbers. If not, then technically could one buy the console button and have the dealer activate their non-PSE vehicle?

I have asked dealer to change/invert sport exhaust button: to make sport as default - answer was: not possible ..... hard to believe, especially when I know that 'start/stop' button can be inverted.

IIRC there are little servos that open and close flaps near the exhaust tips. I suspect the muffler is different too. When you hit the sport exhaust button, the flaps open, but I'm not sure if other things happen as well.

It's really quite simple. There are flaps that open and close near the tips. If you look inside the tips you can see the flaps. They are activated by vacuum lines. Above a certain rpm they get tripped or by pressing the button.

The muffler has 2 ways the exhaust can travel. One is through the muffler and one is a direct path out. When the flaps are closed the exhaust travels throughout the muffler.

Here's an X-ray of our mufflers.

You can achieve even louder exhaust by closing those perforated holes on the left side pipe. Those holes muffle the sound a bit. You would have to dissect the muffler and weld on a solid tube.

People in z06s have been doing that muffler mod for years. Z06s have a similar muffler and flaps.

Question : are aftermarket downpipes enough with stock resonator and mufflers ? Or do we neccesarly the catback in order to increase the velocity of the gasses ?

Down pipes is where the most back pressure comes from. There are 4 huge cats.
