Sport Auto - BMW M5 vs Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG PP vs Porsche Panamera Turbo S

PTTS faster 60-200 also! First time. Apparently the software is able to detect dynos and reduce power to the official output (written in the article)

Interesting results: M5 and E63 AMG are on the same level, same acceleration, E63 pulls a bit better in 4th and 5th gear - despite its longer gearratios. Braking results are pretty bad, considering the perfect conditions: 17 Degrees Celsius air- and 25 Degrees Celsius tracktemperature.

The Panamera Turbo S is the quickest around the Hockenheimring, with its best time of 1.12,1 min it is 1,5 seconds quicker than the M5 and 2,5 s quicker than the E63 AMG.

1st place: BMW M5 - 620 hp on the dyno (claim: 560)

  • Tyres: Michelin Pilot Supersport
  • Weight: 1963 kg
  • 0-100 km/h: 4,3 s
  • 0-200 km/h: 13,0 s
  • Flexibility (80-120 km/h) in 5th/6th gear: 4,5 s/5,6 s
  • Flexibility (80-180 km/h) in 5th/6th gear: 12,2 s/15,3 s
  • 18 m slalom: 66,3 km/h
  • Braking (100-0 km/h), warm: 37,5 m
  • Braking (200-0 km/h), warm: 150,0 m

2nd place: Porsche Panamera Turbo S - 555 hp on the dyno (claim: 550)

  • Tyres: Michelin Pilot Supersport N0
  • Weight: 2024 kg
  • 0-100 km/h: 3,7 s
  • 0-200 km/h: 12,4 s
  • Flexibility (80-120 km/h) in 5th/6th gear: 4,6 s/7,0 s
  • Flexibility (80-180 km/h) in 5th/6th gear: 11,9 s/16,8 s
  • 18 m slalom: 65,0 km/h
  • Braking (100-0 km/h), warm: 34,9 m
  • Braking (200-0 km/h), warm: 144,2 m

3nd place: Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG PP - 610 hp on the dyno (claim: 557)

  • Tyres: Continental Sport Contact 5P
  • Weight: 1941 kg
  • 0-100 km/h: 4,4 s

Wolverine, still willing to bet for the M5? 60-200km/h PTTS is actually faster 10,6s vs 10,7 for the M5.

price of the panny is about $173000, price of the M5 will be - maybe $110000 (?)

so, for those few tenths of a second of quickness, the difference in cost is............

Don't forget you are driving a Porsche, so yeah the difference is substantial because of what you are driving.

New M5 will take away sales from Panamera 6-cyl(loaded) and S. Turbo is a very expensive Panamera, esp when the base starts with the 6 cylinder.

And the M5 looks elegant and understated if some people prefer that.

The New M5 also comes pretty loaded with tech standard.

Either way, both are nice cars.

People that want a M anything are not going to look at 6 cyl automobile. People buy a Porsche because they want a Porsche.

I don't think anybody on this board will get out of there 970 to go get a M or AMG.

Although plenty of us have gotten out of M's & AMG's to get into this car.

same discussion as the GT-R vs 911Turbo.
you have to pay for the badge and the prestige.
M5 and GT-R are both quick BUT they are no Porsche!

Yes, I'd still take the bet. If you take into the only two head-to-head tests, the M5 still wins by the bigger margin in 60-200. But I'm not as confident now.

This is very impressive for the PTTS. 12.4 sec 0-200 kph is really moving. Also 1.5 sec around Hock is just an annihilation. I'm shocked that the M5 was faster in the slalom. And since I don't read German - why did they rate the M5 #1?

M5 rating has got to be "value" based. Great bang for the buck, but the new one does nothing for me and I have daily driven an M5 since 1988. I think a number of us on this are jumping ship after many M's on this board and we are saying something with our wallet - we want a GTS or a TT or a TTS, we don't care about cost, we just like the Panamera better for a variety of reasons. Doesn't mean we don't like the M or respect what has been achieved and for the price they have done some serious magic!

These are all great cars, but I don't really care how a magazine rates them. I just get what I like and enjoy it. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading the different opinions, as I do.

Can't wait for my PTT to come in few weeks.

Wait a second, I just read this right or so I think. Are you telling me that the rated horsepower is 620HP? not the Nm rating as per european scale?

I know manufacturers do this, but that is a big difference.

Did I read that right?

For a driver's car...no doubt the M5/5series is almost a cruiser that can cut a few curves compared to the Panamera which is closer to a sports car than a comfortable tourrer...they both do it all, 5 is slighted towards luxury and the Panny towards sport.

The way interest rates are these days...you're probably right...upgrading to an S/GTS/Turbo is no biggie.

For full details we need the full scan. Remember sport auto is a quality mag, runs are 4-run 2-way averages, I believe. Also the first time both cars had the same tires. So the Auto zeitung test is less valuable, I think.

What is also interesting is at higher speeds +200 the PTTS has a smaller drag coefficient 0,29 vs 0,33 which may also play a role, then again the M5 has better gearing for those speeds, if I remember correctly.
