997 Muffler VS 997S
There was a thread about this years ago on (I think) Rennlist. Someone cut open a 997S muffler and the insides - and hence the path the exhaust gas takes through the can - were totally different to the non-S 997 item. IIRC the standard 997 muffler was the same as the 996 one internally but the S one was a totally different and much freer flowing design.

I could be completly wrong, but would like to know for future reference.
My 997 non-S has the PSE which is the exact same part number and design for 997 S and non-S (but a completely different design than the 996 PSE).
Would be interested in finding out a bit more about this as well - mostly for trivial info reasons. I am not trying to start a flame war, but from my searching on rennlist and others it seemed that the muffler design changed significantly from 993 to 996, but only marginally from 996 to 997: different diameter of pipes in the final outlet portion and different connection to the cats. Both S and non-S 997 seemed to have the same actual muffler design (same "reverse 3 chamber" layout) - but the outlet pipe is 1/4 inch smaller on the non-S (S tips won't fit without adaptors).

Someone who knows how to navigate the PET catalogs could tell you if the 997 and 997S mufflers are the same part number.

Please see attached the 4-page PDF which shows the 997 exhaust parts.
On the 1st and 3rd pages right-top corner, you will see the engine types, namely M96.05 for non-S and M97.01 for S. Then on 2nd and 4th pages, I have red-circled the mufflers' part numbers.
Apparently they are different. Hope this helps!

The one physical difference I know for sure is the final outlet pipe is 2 and 5/16" diameter on the 'S' muffler pipe and is 2" on the non-S. The 5/16" difference is why the 'S' tips will not fit on the non-S without adaptors (only applies to 2008 and earlier models - for 2009 the S and non-S tips are interchangeable).
I thought the internal design of the muffler units was the same.
The pics above do show a difference between the 996 and 997S mufflers but I have not seen the inside of a 997 non-S to compare.
