Tire noise

Hello everyone. I'm new here. I have had multiple performance cars over the years. Wrx, fourth gen Camaro (2 of them-I was in my 20s-LOL), GTI, and three different e46 M3s. Tonight I test drive a 2014 CPO 991 911 S. It had PASM and sport chrono- was great. One thing bothering me though. The car made a ton of road noise that I am fairly sure was from the tires. Noise didn't change if I was on or off the gas. Plenty of tread left. Is this normal? Do the tires wear down in this way-maybe previous owner put a beating in the tires tracking it?

Dealer has offered to swap tires/wheels from another 911 to be sure it is just the tires and I am going to take them up on this. Just wondering if this normal as the tires wear. Thanks.

Michelin tires are quieter. I'd have them put on some Super Sports

I'll bet you $50 that the car you drove has Pirelli P Zeros more than half worn and inflated to like 35psiF, 39psiR. P zeros are ok for about 5000 miles and then get loud as hell until the rears wear out around 12,000 miles and the fronts at 18-20,000 miles. Take the inflation pressure down to the 'comfort' setting for one thing and beat the dealer up for new rear tires if they are below 5/32nds. Most of that noise is coming from the rears. As mentioned, the best fix is to replace the P Zeros with Michelin Pilot Sports.

Michelins are the best.

Chuck would you happen to have any pics of your wheels? Would like to check out the look of the Michelins, had Pzeros on previews 991 and current, thanks

I've noticed that there is less tire roar in the 991.2. Have others found that to be the case or perhaps the 991.2 s I test drove just had quieter tires from the 2015 C2 I had for a day?

991.2 comes equipped with brand new Pirelli PZ4. Not the same tire as the P Zeros we all complain about. It still may not outclass the Michelin but it is certain to be a lot closer. Compare it to the old P Zero:

I drove three different cars and this particular one was the worst. Was hard to have a conversation. The other two were much better. There is some, as to be expected, but not so loud. I passed on that car anyway, it was over-priced and almost out of warranty. $80k, 2014 991 911s with 42k miles.

I've been told that the 991.1 was the quietest 911 to date. Egads, i can't imagine how noisy the previous versions were. My 2015 C4S has deafening road noise on Oregon freeways, makes me want to wear earplugs.

The 997 was a lot noisier. What kind of tires are you using?

Hi, the 991.2 comes with the PZero N1 designation tire (not the PZ4).

I had the PZero N1 fitted to my 911.1 today (see pic).
