My '17 GTS came from the factory with 275/45-R20 Goodyear Eagle LS 2 all-season tires. Which I gather are probably going to be 'disappointing' come winter weather conditions. Luck of the draw with factory rubber options.
If I'm going to spring for a second set I'd likely get both the tires and rims, if just to avoid the added complication of mounting and re-balancing every season. Easier to just bite the bullet on the rims once and then be able to just quickly swap them later. Granted, a periodic balance is certainly worth checking.
This presents the question of which rim diameter. I've run taller sidewalls for winter on past vehicles. Slightly narrower in some cases too. The idea being that'll provide better ability to plow through snow conditions. With the resulting loss of dry handling, of course.
The manual indicates the GTS will support 265/50-R19 and 275/45-R20 (and no 18" rims). I have the Sport Design exterior trim.
I'm in the the mid-Atlantic area and don't anticipate much driving up into the mountains during the winter. We get all kinds of weather here. Sometimes nearly all four seasons, in the same week! So how much I "need" winter tires is certainly a reasonable question. I'm willing to spend to err on the side of caution.
What are other folks running for winter rim sizes?
I actually had to let go of a MY16 GTS with 21s for the MY17 with 20s because of that. The MY16 GTS had summer tires and there's no winter tires on 21s.
In Chicago, the all season (verde) that I had in the GL and Cayenne are adequate, given how often snow is removed.
On my 991, I have winter tires. Costco is the best deal given they are fairly cheap to install the summer/winter tires every season, around $40 with insurance and N2. I considered wheels, but they were so expensive and I wouldn't be able to install them myself anyway (bad back). You can always check eBay for take off wheels.
I had the car during the weekend snowstorm here and the all season tires were just fine. Regarding 19 or 20, probably the former, given higher profile. Check the winter tires list in the Porsche website.
I went with 20's on my '17 for tire options, ride comfort and minimizing rim damage costs.
I despise having to spend any amount of my time schlepping back/forth to a tire shop. I can install wheels but there's plenty of roadside service companies around here. Makes it easy to call someone to have them do the swap in my driveway, for a reasonable fee. However, the balancing equipment they tend to have on-board isn't always as sophisticated as what you might find in a better shop. So then I'd have to contend with the potential for balancing nonsense, tire mounting and rim damage and then have to go to the tire shop. Or buy rims and keep the swap simple.
Yeah, factory rims are going to be spendy.. but then so's the whole damned car.
I suppose I'm looking for someone that's had 19's for winter and has really good reasons why they wouldn't do it again. Otherwise I'm tempted to go with 19's.
If I want to keep the general black look of my current 20" RS Spyder's my nearest factory option is the 19" Sport Classic (958 044 601 36). It's a 19" x 8.5" rim.
Are there any other factory 19" rims that have a black look?
I have semi-gloss black 20" rims on my 2016 GTS with Pirelli winter/snow tires. This setup works well and was relatively inexpensive. I got the whole setup from my dealer as I bought the car last winter and needed to drive it that day.
You can NOT, I repeat NOT use the summer tires in any kind of snow. Winter tires are great in the snow and will turn basically any car into an unstoppable winter juggernaut.
The bonus is that these tires have minimal dry grip, especially on cold pavement, allowing you to get crazy sideways around corners (but you have to watch out for the horrible understeer).
Cayenne GTS, 958.2, 20" Winter wheels & tires...
