End of Year 2017 or 2018?

Hi all, sorry if this question has been asked in previous years but I'm just wondering how much better of a deal I can expect to purchase a new base 2017 991 vs a 2018. I am in the Baltimore/DC area and I am only looking to purchase in stock/immediate delivery and not order. Is getting more than 10% off MSRP realistic on a 2017 model especially if I wait until December?

No trade? Really depends on you and how motivated the dealer is to sell what they have, and the local market. '17s should be in pretty short supply at this point. My dealer is advertising what they call a conquest offer which is $4500 cash back for the 4 991 base models they have left w/MSRPs from $106k to $113.5k. The latter is loaded, guards red, SC, PDK, full black/tan leather, Bose. Beautiful. Personally I wouldn't spend $100k and not get full leather. So much nicer than a plastic interior. Per the ad the $4500 offer ends tomorrow.

Thanks for sharing that. Looks like there are still a good amount of 2017s in stock in the Mid-Atlantic so that's why I'm hoping to get a good deal on a 2017...just not sure what realistic expectations are especially if the 992 is 1.5 years away. Is over 10% off MSRP realistic on a 2017?

Logic is somewhat out the window when dealing. Whether it's year end or another new model is approaching, that won't matter too much. It's all about here and now, and whether they're motivated to move what they have. Typically they are motivated to move the outgoing model as they have many new cars inbound and they need to clear the lot. The best way to get the best deal is to not have a trade, and to make the offer you want and see what they do. You can always walk if you don't like what they're willing to do. Have you thought about leasing? Per my dealer, the 36/39 month lease is the best price and Porsche lets you out of it 12 months early if you want. Something to consider since the first owner takes the depreciation bath.

Interesting...I did not consider leasing thinking I wouldn't get much of a deal but perhaps I should bring it up when I visit the dealers. Yea...I just need to be disciplined to walk away. I finally have the opportunity to buy a new 991 and just need to be smart about it. I am also debating just waiting for the 992 but that could be another 2+ years away.

The only time waiting amounted to a hill of beans is if you owned a 996 and wanted a worthy new 911, then yes waiting for the 997 would have been well worth it as the gap is quite a lot. The 997 ushered in the modern 911. Ultimately since the 997, and especially 997.2 (2009), you've got a great car. You're really splitting hairs these days. All are just as pleasurable to drive, but for sure newer does bring about better electronic features. These days the base 991 has quite a lot of performance. With each new iteration, Porsche typically gives the outgoing S performance to the base. The base today is every bit as quick as a 997.2 S. Considering that, having something above a base 991 just means you're using less of what the car can do. Give me a base 991 and a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and I'll give the S a run for its money on any twisty bits of tarmac. Don't wait. It's also ideal to not have the last year of something except in the case of special editions, or in the case of 2016 you had the choice of the traditional flat 6/3.4 (991.1 base) or wait and get the smaller 3.0 turbo delivering 20 more hp. The power delivery and sound characteristics of each still has people viewing 2016 as a dividing line.

Personally I think the coolest touring 991 is the targa. I hate sunroofs and don't like the complete openness of the cabrio. There are some really nice Targa 4S 991s (2015) for around $115k, very well equipped with super low miles.

Lava orange and Miami blue are the very best 2 things about a 2017+ 991.

I purchased a 2017 in Chicagoland 9/9/17 at 10% off. I had visited the dealer ship about a month earlier. Did not really need much haggling, but again, there are multiple dealerships in the metro Chicago area

2017 I would set my goals at 10-12% and that is very doable.

2018, off the lot I know my dealership does 5.5% to 7% depending how well it is equipped.

if you are interested I have a agate grey 2017 with high gloss black wheels and it only has 255 miles on it. I took it to my dealer to sell for me and I'm going to order another car from them. it is at Jackie cooper Porsche in Tulsa OK. it is absoutly mint and when it came off the truck I didn't even let the dealer peel the plastic. I took it home did a full paint correction had the car wrapped in expel ultimate. the wheels, glass were coated with opti coat pro plus. Then I took it and had a full Fab speed exhaust set up done on it. WOW it really sounds good with no drone. I have all factory exhaust in the boxes. if you are interest in looking at it your can go to their web site or I can text you some pic's. It listed for 113,000 and I put 9,000 in extras on it. they have it listed at 95,000. my number is 816 797-5335 if interested and my name is travis.

Dealer cost is 11 percent . I don't think they will go under invoice . Personally I'd opt for the 18 (even though i have a 2017 late model GTS ) unless one plans to keep the car a long time . With the GTS at least it was released late in the 17 cycle but the snag with the other trim variants is that they were launched in March of 2016 . For example I also have a 17 Macan GTS that i bought in April of 2016 so a 17 car can have an actual age of 18 months . That plays out on the used market if the person keeps the car shorter term .

You're right about the model cycles regarding the years. I use this logic too.

However, I do think the depreciation curve is greater then 11% if they were to hold on to the vehicle as 18's also sit on the lot and dealers here in S. Cal have been aggressive with moving them because most here want the next newest and greatest thing.

Personally, the Porsches I buy gets daily driven. Typically put about 100K on it in 3.5 years so getting the greater discount vs the newer year is a tough one. I would probably move on the newer if there were changes but if all things equal and it was my DD...I would do the greater discount.
