Bogg, I'm actually farther east... Newfoundland.. haha
My car actually came from the GTA, so you never know, they may have been stable mates at one point.
Cheers Guys!
Newfoundland???? What do you need all the power for, outrunning moose??
Haha sorry for vanishing guys! Finally back to society!
The Moose Struggle is real! Checkout the local news article from yesterday!
hopefully the image isn’t crazy large.
Bogg. What are the stats from your 3073’s? And what boost controller did you go with?
Hey Mitchy,
what stats are you looking for? I will be using the latest HKS EVC 6 2.4IR boost controller.
My engine is apart (externally) and we are coming up with the parts list and then put humpty back together. I've taken a page from Rix's book - rather than having a thread that gets periodically updated I will post the details when the whole thing is almost complete.
Bogg,
Just wondering what the Compressor stats are, inducer/exducer. I assume the Turbine is your typical 30r.
Trying to relate to the EFRs... Been talking to a few people with 7163's and the older alpha kits. The install seems easy enough with the engine dropped... maybe doable with the engine lowered?
Having just got back home, I've been trying to see how difficult the coolant/oil hose install would be if I went that route. Building the nerve to drop the engine and attempting to remote the existing lines. I need to replace my spark plugs anyway
Debating if upgraded turbos are really able to be utilized with stock rods... Sams 68mm units seem to be a nice stop-gap as I had planned to change out the rods next year.
The 68mm units will keep their resale value too when the time comes to 'go big'
Looking forward to your build log!
I should be selecting my path forward shortly. It's been sidelined for the last few weeks due to work projects.
I think the Xonas I have flow almost the same as the original a3076s. Obviously a smaller inducer - 73 vs 76 but there have been efficiencies in the last few years apparently - blade design etc...
Seeing my engine out and the way the coolant supply hoses run underneath the intake plenums on each side I just can't imagine how one would install the turbos and coolant lines without dropping the engine. But I bet someone has done it, lol.
Absolute piece of cake to replace the spark plugs when engine down and all parts off the engine. There are a ton of smart things to do while the engine is down...
The current generally available VTG hybrids are all of a flawed design. The wheels are based on diesel applications, and are not ideally suited to the 997 application. They have large exducers and small inducers.
It is the inducer that does the work, and determines how much the turbo will flow. The exducer is then sized according to the pressure ratio ans surge characteristics. a 65 or 68mm exducer is far too big for this application, given that the boost is and 1.6 bar maximum compared to the 2 bar plus on diesel applications. This results in unnecessary lag which is why these hybrid VTG's feel so lazy.
A typical hybrid might run a 47mm inducer with 65mm exducer. I am currently testing a wheel with a 49mm inducer, but with only a 62mm exducer. It's only be run at 1 bar so far, but is only marginally less responsive than the stock turbo. More testing to come but it is looking very promising.
This thread was helpful....coolant outlet drama so engine is coming down. Just debating the upgrades since I am in there already.
Hey t,
I will be updating my thread soon...I went through the whole "while the engine is down" upgrade process. In a nutshell, I basically replaced every gasket, o-ring and coolant/oil line. I plan on keeping the car, lol.

Rick
Rick I can understand where you are coming from however as most know or suspect this is a deep subject and there is a lot to this. Turbocharger development is what I do for a living and I'm also an enthusiast so we can go as deep as you want within reason on a public forum . I can talk turbo until peoples eyes glaze over .
Your comment on inducer correlating to airflow is correct however it is not absolute. As in anything in engineering the right answer is it depends. If we compare the same wheel design, yes the larger inducer diameter will flow more. However you can have two different wheel designs with the same or smaller inducer and more flow. What you are really after is throat area. This is done all the time in the OEM space but you can see examples even in aftermarket. I won't mention who's wheel but there is an aftermarket wheel design released with the same inducer dia, exducer dia, and hub line dimensions as the original but it flows more. They modified the splitter blade to gain the throat area.
As far as spool up my 63.5mm Protos spool up just as fast as stock, I'm at 20psi by 3400rpm. The larger wheels like the 65mm and 68mm offerings yes all things being equal can spool slower but as mentioned with good tuning they come on real fast, not much slower at all than mine. For reference if I recall correctly I measured my Protos at 48mm inducer before installing them. I can also confirm the 68mm Sam sells flow quite a bit more the my Protos at the same or similar inducer diameter, I have plenty of datalogs on them now.
Wheel designs being brought in from diesel and so on, there is some truth to this however not a good one for forums lol.
The wheel you mention looks similar to a BW EFR wheel. Looking forward to hearing the results.
