Along with some other things I want to do, bringing this PSS9 coilover beast under control was one of them. Sways, droplinks, solid pucks and other tidbits were all part of the research until I stumbled on this DSC thing. At first I glanced it off, but then I kept reading and finally decided it was what I was going to do first.
Holy cow, my advice to anyone running PASM & Coilovers is to get this unit ASAP. I have been modding suspensions since I was 23, and I have to tell you this is the single most impressive change I have ever made.
Since I had never owned a car with an active suspension before, I was limited to shocks & springs and sways and bushings to induce firm control without shattering teeth. This little box that took 3 minutes to install instantly changed the handling characteristics and made the car feel like I expect it to feel. Gone was the hoppy kind of effect you can get in undulations, especially when turning and under power. While you got to feel that first divot of imperfection, the car smoothed out and let you rip into the turn without worrying if your wheels were going to stay on the ground or be weighted enough.
You can still kill yourself in this thing, but in the hands of a careful but spirited driver, you are going to get the most out of the car.
I've watched videos and read posts, but there is nothing like driving it with the Porsche PASM and then swapping to the DSC to inform you of what it is doing. Absolutely incredible. Order one now.
Now I just have to find these mounts to get rid of the spring pop in the coilovers and I will be well on my way to a state of Zen with the handling.
It's when the springs bind up against the underneath of the upper strut mount before they break loose and pop into position. it's annoying and I have to believe solvable.
The above is the solution, I just can't find anything about the mount on the right. On the left you can see what I am talking about.
Never give up, never surrender (for any Galaxy Quest fans out there).
After much searching, a contact left for Atomic80 who did this and some phone calls to suspension shops, I think I have found them. Patrick Motorsports:
They are pricey, but this noise is so embarrassing and distracting and just plain sounds wrong it will be worth it to vanquish it to this vehicle's forgotten past.
I have the same mounts.
got mine from ‘Performance Shock inc.” I believe they’re made by MODE.
Well built mounts! You will get more road noise as they’re a monoball type.
I also ordered some thrust bushings (basically a stainless ring sandwiched between Teflon pieces) from FRSsport.
No coil binding at all!, here’s the info for them:
Swift 744303 Spring Thrust Sheets Kit 70mm 2.75"
I’ve been meaning to upgrade to the DSC... Maybe in a few months!
I was just as paranoid as you, As I basically ordered the PSS10s then read about the coil binding... Some people said it was an issue, others didn't know anything about it...
I suspect if you just used more of the thrust washers, it'll probably be fine.
After hearing the horror stories I ordered the mounts then a friend of mine showed me the thrust washers. I used two sets on the front, since any you can just adjust the coil downwards to compensate..
May be overkill.
One thing I've noticed is that the swaybar mount is at a very bad angle, so I'm eventually going to switch to another swaybar mounting system like these:
But this isn't an issue with the PSS10s, Just a compromise on how they use a stock like mounting.
