Good drives in So Cal

I live in Orange County, and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what road to take the 911 out for a good spin w/o too many traffic. I don't care if u recommend going there at night either.

Im particularly interested in a nice road with some good twisties, and if it comes with a nice scenic drive, that would even be better. 2-3 hours drive would be perfect!

I've tried PCH. Way too congested on the weekend.

Pls advice.

Have you ever hit up Ortega Highway down by San Juan Capistrano?

The mountain roads in the Big Bear area can be fun - SR 18, 330 and 38. BUT. CHP recently announced an intensive effort to go after speeders and drunk drivers on those roads.

Ortega Highway is also subject to very heavy CHP presence. It used to be a mecca for fast motorcycles -- don't know if that's still true or not.

also see santiago canyon road... and check out the turn off for silverado canyon rd.
and there are several other little roads in around there, do some exploring.

santiago canyon rd is very nice, so of course the weekends it will be filled with guys on choppers in their biker uniforms...
and watch out for cops also.
but late at night it is beautiful... some nice high speed sections.

Ortega Hwy 74 has fast long sweeping turns and the view isn't shabby either. people are right, there are few cops patrolling during certain times. i drive there quite frequently, but i try to finish my drive before 8 am. a lot of commuters during the week and dreamers on the weekend.

the best place with really demanding turns is palomar mountain without any question. only problem is the 1 hour drive to get there. i do that run probably about once a quarter. during the week it is supposed to be really dead up there (at least that's what a f-car driver told me last time i was there). on weekends try to be there between 6.30 - 7 and all you'll see is cars running up and down the mountain and speed bikers scraping knees. at about 9-9.30 tourists will show up and the occasional cop. there are 2 parts to the mountain, south grade has very sharp and tight turns, east grade has long straights.

again if you can make it to palomar, do it. you will not regret it. here is a map:
http://www.lateralg.org/roads/sandiego/1.htm

now that i am talking about it, we should organize a palomar run soon.

Taking Santiago Cyn out to Silverado, Modjeska and Live Oak Canyon is probably the closest nice drive near you.
