Track Noob: Best Deals on Helmets?

Hi,

I'm looking to do my first track event this weekend and I'm looking to get a helmet.

I'm leaning towards a HJC AR10 since the price is pretty reasonable and found one for $299.99 free shipping.

Can anyone give advise on this helmet, good for novice trackie?

Anywhere I can find it cheaper?

Should I get other things like gloves, shoes, while I'm at it?

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

you would be better off going to a local shop where you can try on several different helmets and get the right fit...get the latest Snell rating you can....(most DE groups still take Snell 2000 but the higher skill track events will require 2004/5 or higher)....for DE any sport/tennis shoe will be fine for now but you will find heel/toe easier with racing shoes...some groups/tracks require gloves and some don't so check with the group you are going to run with

+1 on GT3 Chuck

some other things to keep in mind

- stick w/2005SA rating. the SA2000 ratings expired this year I believe, the SA2005 ratings will expire in 2015...so you will save yourself some money

- try to drive at a DE event w/the shoes u wear often. you don't want to introduce any MORE new variables to driving on the track. I laugh when I see people wearing brand new 150 buck piloti's for the first time ever, just because they want to be prepped. i graduated into pilotis because they have an extension on the shoulder of your feet and the heel - to increase heel toe ability. i have recently gone back to an FIA rated Alpine Star racing shoe.

- try gloves on after you have driven w/out them. i used to like no gloves, but recently moved back to gloves because i found my hands to get sweaty and on my new steering wheel - Momo Trek Alcantara - the gloves would grip the wheel better.

have fun and double check requirements w/your club and race track.

I agree 100% on the helmet. Go SA2005....You're not going to wear out the helmet lining using it a few times a year so you'll get max bang for the buck. GT3 Chuck is right on....different helmets fit differently; even in the same brand.

I would differ on the gloves. Likewise, I have an Alcantara wheel and shift so the extra grip is great. However......HEAVEN FORBID you get in a situation where you're dealing with broken glass, sharp metal or FIRE, and without gloves you might have a problem getting yourself out of the car. I wear 'em when I instruct. Like my HANS, hope I don't need it but......

Now, having said all that:
I wear a Bell Mag 5 OPEN FACE. Why? I really do like my face but in a closed car with an airbag, I don't expect my face to come in contact with anything hard and in FL, it's a lot cooler. With instructing (even with a communicator), it's easier to convey the message to the student. The Mag 5 is discontinued and costs about half what I paid for it.

OK, I'll be standing over in the corner now, putting on some Nomex underwear for the flame job I'm about to receive.
