was hoping to find a wide tire with plenty of winter ( non snow ) grip

I am happy with Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D & M3 combo (as per TireRack winter tire recommendations). (On a 2002 C4S.)

While you may not need the extra sipes for the snow (in which they work very well, by the way), the rubber performs superbly in the cold and wet.

They come in a 295 width rear, so work well with wider rims in the 10.5" to 11.5" range.

Agreed. Snow tire rubber is often a softer compound and gets better traction on the cold pavement.
