Increasing offset by machining hub
Increasing offset by machining hub
Brothers, i am wondering if we can increase wheel offset by taking off some material on a wheels hub. Hre wheels for example do pocketing to reduce weight which could mean that there is enough material on the hub for strenght.. But can we actually machine some material say 1 to 3mm max from the hub to increase offset. Wheels are hre p40's with et 56 i prefer to go to et 59. The official guys will most probable say it will affect strenght. I would agree, but there are acceptable degrees of reduced strenght as im sure hre provide a good margin of safety on their wheels. Hope someone can share their experiences.
The issue of strength will be the lugs. When you remove the material off the back of the mounting pad the lug seat height will decrease too. The minimum height from the top of the conical seat to the back of the wheel should be no less than 14mm. If the seat is taller than 14mm you might be able to remove a little to get you to the 14mm threshold. If you're already there I wouldn't take any more off, you'll run the risk of getting cracks between the lugs. Naturally, any machining you do yourself will void the structural warranty as well.
