Electric sports cars are officially here. The enduring question is whether or not this new hybrid obsession will spell the end of classic (low weight plus big engine) performance cars. I don’t now, but Chris Harris has a better idea of what the future holds than I do. He got to take the latest 918 prototype around Porsche’s Leipzig test track. He only got three laps, but that’s three laps more than anyone else.

Evo magazine got a similar test drive with a much earlier prototype a few months back, but Chris gets to give it the gas a little bit in his run here. What strikes me the most is the sound. At full tilt this thing sounds like a race car. It moves like one too. Even Chris Harris, driver of all things brutally quick, is surprised by it’s performance. That performance does makes us wonder what it’d be like without all the heavy hybrid technology weighing it down. The chassis is the lightest and most capable Porsche has ever built. I’m sure it would be and extremely entertaining drive with that race-bred V8 in the back.

More than that, this video gives us a pretty good look at what the 918 might be like as a daily driver. It has some idiosyncrasies, but what car doesn’t. We’ll just call that “character.”
