PCA Membership Value

PCA Membership Value
Periodically I get asked, or hear of someone asking, about the value of PCA membership. I'll give an example, or two, of how PCA membership has worked for me. Annual membership (if paid annually) is $46. If you have your dealership do a tune up, minor maintenance plus transmission or brake flush, then the 10% discount on work performed will pay for the membership alone. That added to the monthly get-togethers and seasonal rallies, PCA track days, breakfast clubs meetings, mystery tours, car shows.... NOT to mention the great magazines (local and national) and you come up with a value far exceeding the annual membership.
If your not into convivial soirees with other Porsche aficionados, don't care for glossy Porsche-filled magazines or don't even participate in PCA track days or racing, the 10% membership discount at your Porsche dealer can easily cover the $90 two-year membership fee. I had the dealership do some work on the Cayenne this week which my membership saved me $500 (that's 10 years of membership). Your appreciation my vary.

Dealers are under no obligation to give a PCA discount for parts or service, though most will.
But when the dealers price their parts at ~20% over suggested list to begin with (a pretty common practice) and I pay 7%+ sales tax, its rare that I'll visit the dealer for any parts needs other than the occasional small item.
And as mentioned, service work is usually 50% to 100% more than good indy's, and 10,000% more than doing the work yourself.
That said, I happily pay for PCA membership. Just not for the dealer discount!

I am a PCA member, but I do agree that taking your car to a good indy will save you way more than 10%. Most things I have had quoted at the dealer were double or more than getting something done at an independent shop.
The PCA value to me is the people you get to meet that have the same enthusiasm for the Porsche brand as yourself. Most local PCA chapters put together events such as rallies, dinners, etc that are a lot of fun. Throw in the magazine each month and it's a nice bonus.

One thing I miss about the Porsche club is any new Porsche purchase incentives...
e.g.:
e.g.:
- BMW CCA gets you $500-$2000 rebate when you buy a new BMW.
- Audi club gets you fixed, below invoice pricing on new vehicles.
- Mercedes club gets you fleet pricing...
- etc.

I've let my membership lapse for almost two years now. From the pics and stories in the magazines I haven't really been that enthusiastic to take part (maybe I'm not old enough yet). Excellence Magazine is nice though.

Fleet Pricing? What's that?

You have to remember the PCA is NOT tied to Porsche North America or Porsche Germany in any way other then the love for the car. This is NOT true in the rest of the world where Porsche Germany is part of the club and gives money to the clubs. That is why PCA does not use the Porsche logo or cars in their advertisements.

If your car isn't a daily driver, you can get fantastic insurance through PCA and Leland West. The PCA insurance discount with my '88 911 Targa more than paid for my membership, and the coverage was far cheaper than Hagerty and others. They also still allow driving to work, which many of the others don't.

I was going to let my membership lapse until I was older too, but the Editor in Chief of Excellence left to overhaul the PCA magazine & now it is worth the membership just for the mag. (Panarama)
