Spongy Thing in my Airbox?

Who knows what that spongy thing in our airfilter box is for? Mine is starting to break apart due to age, does anyone know if this can be purchased separately?

Spongy Thing ? Item 7 in the illustration ? This nylon membrane is designed to vent the airbox should you take on any moisture, water. I've also read it's to assist with intake acoustics.....( not sure about that tho )

Thanks but no, it is not the membrane. There is a sponge thing held down in the bottom of the airbox right near the entrance to the airbox. If looking down at the inside of the airbox while oriented in the engine bay, the membrane is on the right bottom and the sponge is on the left bottom.

I can take a picture if needed, I thought this would have been an obvious question to those who change their own air filter. Thanks.

My money would be on a noise suppressor...Many other makes use them to quiet the intake "suck" and as Hattrick stated, also may help with catching unwanted moisture, dust, leaves or bugs.

A picture might make it easier to answer your question. Why not post one and find out.

I also see charcoal colored spongy thing in my airbox as well. I wonder if you can get more power and noise without it??

It's most likely for the purpose of noise reduction than anything else. I would get rid of it completely if it's breaking apart. You may get more intake sound which can be a good or bad thing depends on the person.

But don't quote me on it.

Like stated above I think its for achieving a certain intake sound that porsche wanted. performance wise its not going to make a difference with or without it.

If a hose and a cap can add 10hp I'd think removal of the spongy thing would add at least that much

The spongy thing is as HATTRICK stated and should not be removed. It can be replaced with a new part and I would suggest you sund any of the sponsers on the board here the pic HATTRICK supplied and they will gladly sell you the replacement part.

Sorry, but I am not talking about the white membrane thingy (which I know can be replaced and is part of HATTRICK's diagram) - my question is about the spongy thingy.

its under the filter element right? if so, its just a rough filter that drains out any rain the intake sucks in. i would either replace the foam with another foam or felt or leave it.
