Advice Pls: My 05 997S had the dreaded RMS leak

Hi,

My 05 997S with 25,000 Km has just developed an RMS leak It is still a small leak and the dealer says they will replace the seal under extended warranty.

I read in other threads on the 996 that this may or may not fix the probelm. Any of you have any experience in this regard or advice on if I should insist that they check if the crankshaft is out of spec.

Does Porsche have any stand on this for the 997 ?

Advice appreciated.

Thanks,

I'm not sure what you're asking. The dealer is going to pay for it, so have it done. They have to take measurements regardless as part of the warranty process. I still can't believe that eight years later they still haven't fixed this. Riddiculous. I have had it done a couple times on my 3.6 996.

Just had it done on my '06 997S with 3K miles on it.

Had the same problem with my '05 GT3.

Rob, what color is your car, looks atlas (good)on your avatar?

FYI, mine had a 'slow' rms leak for almost three years, never enough to replace, just had to add a qt of oil every now and then. Guess what, it never blew up. The RMS thing is just a simple oil leal, no more, no less, blown out of proportion imo.

Set it on fire and push it into the river. It's the only reasonable solution to the problem.

Get it fixed. Btw, if you have abused the hell out of your clutch, now is the time to get a new one.

Yup, it is indeed Atlas. My first (and only) non-white 911 ever. When I went to order the car I saw another in Atlas and just had to have it. I love the color.

Yeah, I guess as long as they are fixing it under warranty I should not worry about it.

The car is pretty new, under 20k miles, would I need a new clutch? I don't know that I abuse it, but do use the car for DE's and Autocross. However, I have had the clutch kind of stick half way and slip a few times while dropping it from not very high RPMs at the track. Not had this happen on any other car so assumed it may be a Porsche thing. Would this hurt the clutch or be a sign of a clutch I need to replace?

The car drives fine around town and clutch does not slip from reasonably rapid stoplight starts.

Also, I not sure where the RMS is, can it cause oil to leak onto the clutch?

Thanks in advance for any info

I bought my '03 996 in December of 2005 (12k miles on the odeometer) and the PPI indicated a RMS leak. They replaced it and said they had just gotten a new seal that was supposed to finally be a solution that fixed the problem.

I don't know if it actually did or not, but if so any car built prior to fall 2005 (including some MY2006 cars) could potentially be affected.

Porsche has said they had a fix for this several times now. If that was the case, how in the world do the 997's roll off the production line with RMS problems? Porsche ought to do every one of these for free whether your car is under or out of warranty. a 100K dollar car shouldn't leak oil....

Interesting... Everyone is so convinced that the M96/97 series engines are inferior because the GT3/TT block NEVER has the RMS leak....

I guess they are wrong.
