Search for the dream
That craigslist ad broke my heart. Exactly what I was looking for, only a couple miles away. Too busy to stalk that week because of work, by the time I got in touch with the seller someone was on their way to pick it up from Texas. Any advice you can offer? I'm sure the last thing you want is competition in the hunt. wife thinks I'm insane for willing to spending this kinda money on a 15 year old car, we have a 19 month old, she's pushing hard for an SUV.

haha yeah me too. I check them daily too and missed it by a day. luckily my wife is OK with it. we plan on getting a macan for our first kid whenever that is.
I much prefer black and white but was willing to "settle" for the gray at that price. if I see one I'll let you know.

That being said, I have owned my 996TT for about 8mo. I looked at several cars before pulling the trigger on mine. The best advice I got here was something to the effect of "the cheapest Porsche you can buy will more than likely be the most expensive car you ever own."
I do have a child seat in the back of my Turbo so that I can take the little man out for drives...he loves riding in 'Papa's Car!"

Thanks. Appreciate everyone's help and advice. Wife has an accord for baby duty, just trying to muscle me into an SUV since that's her thing. If we have another baby, we will swap the accord for something with more space. Hopefully between a PPI, low owner count, I shouldn't end up with a money pit?

I would say in addition to a good PPI, verfied owner count, and full service documentation, you'd want to befriend a current 996 Turbo owner to put a second set of eyes on the car. Reading about the car and owning the car are two different things...

You get what you pay for= best advice ever given. Finding a 996tt for under 40k that wont require money/time spent is unlikely, but not impossible. Spend some time reading the woes from the discount buyers= within a month they are having problems on average= Have seen quite a few back up for sale within less than a year. Good luck.

I have a 2003 TT Seal Gray Metallic/Black Interior/Manual that I've been thinking about selling. It does however, have 93,600K miles on it. I live in Virginia Beach and use it as my daily drive.
I'm the second owner. I purchased the car in Feb. of 2006 with 25K miles on it when I lived in Orlando. It's been a very dependable daily drive over the years. It's pretty much stock except for a GT2 slave conversion and B & M short shifter. It has the OEM small carbon fiber option package, 14 way memory seats with Porsche crest in the headrest, Michelin PS2's front and rear tires on OEM 18" wheels that were put on less than 400 miles ago, a Pioneer AVIC D1 Navigation/XM/iPod head-unit and a B & M short shift. The OEM muffler was modified 8 years ago where a 1.5" hole was drilled into each exhaust outlet to decrease back-pressure and to give the engine a little bit better exhaust note. The modification is well documented in the 996 TT forum. It also picked up a little more HP. I do have another stock exhaust without the modification that would be included.
Maintenance has been kept up with oil/filers changes every 5k miles and plugs at recommended intervals. A certified Porsche mechanic, Lutzo Kovacyk at LMN Motor Sports in Virginia Beach, works on the car when needed. The front bumper and chin spoiler were recently replaced due to road debris putting a small hole in these parts. The hood, fenders, and roof were also repainted due to 3M film damaging clear coat and base coat. It has not been in any accidents. I have the maintenance records, keys and manuals. Let me know if you might be interested in talking.
Best Regards,
Tim

Tim/tjj7ff thank you, mileage is higher than I'd like, hoping to keep her for a long time.
Again, appreciate the advice. Expanded search to within driving distance, which for me means ~ 500 miles from Northern VA/Washington DC.
Mkhan - Congrats, and thanks for adding salt to that fresh wound. Drive home must have been great. How'd everything work out with the car, seemed like a solid owner a great deal.
