4-Rotor FD RX-7 is the Definition of JDM Dream Car

By -

Making an easy 1000 WHP, Mazzei Formula’s RX-7 brings us tears of joy all while making our ears bleed.

What happens when people love something too much? They turn it into a cult. We have to say that the rotary engine is one of these cults. They’re unreliable, they’re old tech, they get terrible gas mileage, they don’t last, you name it. We’ve heard everything about rotaries being terrible and somehow, people still build them on a daily basis.

Well, the FD RX-7 has become more than just the sum of its parts in today’s current landscape. It’s an icon. A symbol of its time. A rare and loyal following match the car as a result. Other cars from the ’90s have trouble keeping up with the FD. It simply looks too good. Now the real question is, why do people still build rotaries in the first place? Well, the guys at the Hoonigan YouTube channel seem to have the answer with this 4-rotor FD.

Ask the owner of this stunning car, David Mazzei, why he decided to spend the money to build a very expensive rotary engine. His response is simple, “I like the sound”. We couldn’t agree more. If there is anything rotaries have going for them, it is the sound they make. This particular sound is one of the most important and key aspects that put them above other engine configurations in the mind of those obsessed. You see, due to the high-revving nature of these engines, they make sounds other engines simply can’t. That gets us excited.

Mazzei states that his goal with this wild RX7 was to keep it looking like a “factory model car or race car.” Obviously, the car is far from stock. However, staying true to his original idea, there is no cutting of the firewall or chassis to fit the 2 extra rotors or the literal monster of a turbo. With 16 separate injectors and 14 pounds of boost, this Mazda is ready to get angry. At 14 psi the 4-rotor makes around 1100 WHP. Considering the rear-mounted radiator, the air-to-water intercooling, and the dozens of custom parts, this car is properly badass.

However, do not forget the most important part of this car, the sound. As much as we would like to describe how literally jaw-dropping this car sounds, there is no words that can really do the sound justice. We beg you to watch the second half of the video for pure eargasms (headphone users beware).
