The Most Unbreakable Rotary-powered Vehicle Ever?

By -

Watch as four-foot flames shoot out of this Mazda pickup for literal minutes on end. How did it survive? We don’t know.

The people at 1320video on YouTube are recognizable hosts of some of the most rambunctious automotive events during the year. Drag racing, burnout competitions, you name it. If it involves potential destruction of motor vehicles and encourages loud noises, they are your guys. Some of the world’s most amazing race cars and builds have been featured on the channel. However, it’s always the cars you expect to impress you the least that end up leaving the biggest impressions.

We introduce Angel Motorsports‘ 1974 Mazda Pickup, known as “Repu”. Powering this humble classic is a 13B rotary engine that was a gift from an FD Mazda RX-7. It’s safe to say that the brothers that run Angel Motorsports do not play around when it comes to going hard or going home. Their signature is building rotary engines from the ground up. When this Mazda Pickup showed up to the Cleetus & Cars event in Florida recently, they had nothing on their mind other than stealing the show. Let’s find out why.

Initially, the truck was brought out with the intention of making a couple of passes at the strip. During testing, the truck was making adjustments and fixing some kinks, but it still managed a respectable 12-second pass. However, once everything was in order, the plan was to turn up the boost and see what happens. Their goal for the weekend was to run a 10-second pass on high boost.

Unfortunately, the track had to close before they could run a decent pass with their fixed setup. Fret not, the Angel boys were not ready to leave the event empty-handed. They decided to then enter the burnout competition and killed the competition. Considering the fact there is a bright blue turbo with a massive hater pipe sticking up the engine bay, this truck is the definition of a crowd-pleaser. What unfolded next could only be best described as pure destruction.

This rotary was perfect because it needed to be to handle stress. The truck managed to shoot flames and hang on the limiter for what seemed like an eternity. After a timely explosion from the engine bay and some fire extinguishers later, we thought the truck was definitely dead. However, when they limped it to the pits it started right up and shot more flames as if nothing happened. The Vargas brothers did their best to kill this rotary, but today was not its day. When it does die, I would take the apex seals and frame them for good luck.
