Third of All Porsche Carrera GTs Are Being Recalled

Almost 500 Porsche Carrera GTs were recalled by Porsche due to the potential failing of suspension parts.
If you own a legendary 2004-2005 Porsche Carrera GT, it’s not unlikely you’ve already heard the news. Due to spherical joints in the suspension being susceptible to mechanical stress and corrosion, Porsche is recalling 489 Carrera GTs. It may seem like an insignificant number to be recalling, but when the total number of all existing models being only 1,300, it becomes a little scarier.
When referencing documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHSTA), the issue is with spherical joints the connect the wishbone suspension on the front and rear axles. When exposed to mechanical stress or corrosion, Porsche says the chances of total part failure is too great to risk. Porsche’s defect notice reads, “The material used does not provide sufficient resistance to inter granular stress corrosion when exposed to salt and mechanical stress over service life. This could result in cracks or fractures in the spherical joints, and possible [sic] the wishbone.”
It all started with a unique case in 2019, when a customer came in to have the suspension parts looked at. Though, due to the limited number of Carrera GTs, Porsche didn’t find it recall worthy until more cases came pouring in. Customers came in complaining of a small vibration, and Porsche found that to be the only warning. Otherwise, Porsche warns the parts could fail without warning.

Due to the age of the vehicles being recalled, parts are no longer available. So, Porsche’s has to make them from scratch. When owners arrive at the dealership for the recall, Porsche technicians will perform an inspection. Should the parts be found to be affected, they will advise the car not be driven until parts are available and a loaner vehicle will be provided. If they’re not immediately affected, the dealership will return the vehicle with the thumbs up for unrestricted use until the new parts come in.
Should you be one of the lucky few to own a 2004-2005 Porsche Carrera GT, reference the NHSTA recall documents here.
