Ferrari 458 Italia Burns to Ground in Switzerland

Another Ferrari 458 Italia has gone up in flames on a Swiss highway last weekend.

The owner managed to escape the blaze scot-free , but of course, his Italia is nothing more than charred pile of rubbish like so many 458’s before it. According to Ferrari, the problem with the 458 is with a glue they used in the cars wheel arches. They say that if the car has been driven hard in high ambient temperatures, the glue could smoke and catch fire. That’s what the recall was supposed to fix. In 2010.

Apparently it didn’t work for this guy, assuming that he took his $230,000 sports car in to get the flammable bits replaced. Even then, most of these incidents have taken place on highways and in traffic. Neither one of those conditions constitute hard driving. Regardless, they shouldn’t have problems under those condition anyway. What else is a Ferrari for if you’re not driving it hard?

Maybe it’s a design issue in regards to cooling. Maybe it is just Ferrari using a flammable glue. Maybe it’s the ghosts of Ferrari’s racing drivers come back to wreak havoc on what is an otherwise excellent sports car.  Even the FF is getting in on the sudden inferno action. Whatever it is, we can’t imagine the minds of Italia owners getting any lighter with each one that burns to the ground out of the blue.
