Aston Martin DB11 Volante: 5 Things You May Not Know

By -

Think you know all there is to know about the Aston Martin DB11 Volante? Here are some more interesting tidbits.

At this point, we know quite a few things about the all-new 2019 Aston Martin DB11 Volante. Like, it’s gorgeous (duh!). And it uses (shocking!) an AMG-sourced V8 for motivation instead of a proper Aston-developed V12. The pretty drop top is also rear-wheel drive (obviously) and shares the excellent ZF-sourced 8-speed transmission with much of its brethren. But what about the less obvious details surrounding this stunning new convertible? Well, that’s where this video from Jalopnik comes in.

The point, of course, is to bring to light five things we may not already know about the new Aston Martin DB11 Volante. The first unique tidbit involves engine placement. That aforementioned AMG V8 is actually mounted in a front-mid configuration, which means that it sits way behind the front axle. Or as we like to call it, a place that makes good mechanics curse the engineers who put it there.

Next up is the Mercedes-AMG powerplant itself. The two automakers have actually been partnered up for five years now. And this particular engine is the same one that powers an entire host of the German automaker’s current models. Sorry, Volante fans, no Aston V12 for you in this drop top. But on the bright side, this twin-turbo mill crackles and pops like a proper supercar engine should.

Fortunately, however, the Volante’s electronic-assisted steering isn’t too heavy-handed, at least. And like a proper Rolls Royce, you don’t have to worry about getting your ‘do wet, either. Because the Aston Martin DB11 Volante comes with a cool, bespoke umbrella in the trunk.
