The idea of a hybrid supercar used to be a fantasy, or maybe a great way to make your buddies laugh at a bar, but that has changed recently. McLaren, Porsche, and Ferrari all made limited-run million-dollar supercars that demonstrated the maximum potential of today’s technology. But as impressive as those feats may seem, it is BMW that sits atop the thrown as the true king of hybrid supercars. Rather than a car that costs a million dollars and comes powered with uranium thrust engines making six-bajillion horsepower, the Bavarians provided us with the elegant and sophisticated i8.

With two seats, a mid-engine layout, and main construction from carbon fiber, the i8 has all the supercar bits that buyers expect. It also has the performance buyers demand with a 60 mph sprint that happens in the 4 second range. It does all this, but it is a gasoline-electric hybrid that uses a three cylinder engine. And all that fanciness, all that sportiness, it comes wrapped in a stunning shape that is organic, futuristic, dynamic, and fast. I have yet to meet a single person who isn’t rendered speechless by how this thing looks in person.

It is for all these reasons and more that the BMW i8 was just awarded the distinction of being the 2015 World Green Car Award recipient. With a jury of more than 75 journalists from around the world in 20 different countries, being able to secure such an honor is real achievement.

So big congrats to BMW, but please don’t stop. Make the next i8 faster, more fuel efficient, and even lighter. And maybe you can win this award again!
