We felt like we got a knocked on the jaw when we heard there may be no successor to the C6 Corvette ZR1. To add a hefty amount of insult to injury, Porsche 911 product manager August Achleitner told Car and Driver there may be no 991 GT2. What a swift kick to the nuts that one is.

Now, I could be going into denial about this, but the needle on my BS meter is beginning to rise. Achleitner is citing company politics as the reason the 991 GT2 has yet to receive the green light, but that’s an easy go-to excuse to support what I’m beginning to think is a scare tactic to drum up press for the next GT2.

My BS meter continues to climb when looking at Achleitner’s explanation of the 991 GT2’s technical unfeasibility. He said to Car and Driver, “If you take a look at today’s [560-horsepower] Turbo S and the performance this car produces… you cut away the front-wheel drive for the GT2, but the car loses traction.” Oh, please. Even if the next GT2 were to have 620 horsepower, it would still be fine with rear-wheel drive. If the McLaren MP4-12C can handle 616 horsepower blasting to the rear tires, so can the 911 GT2.

If Porsche were to deny us a next-gen GT2, that would be the cop-out of the decade. Don’t you agree?
