Comparing New Aston Martin Vantage Against the DB11 Volante

By -

Aston Martin is pushing their new vision forward, but how does the new DB11 Volante stack up next to the current Vantage?

Don’t be fooled by the opening of this video from the Lovecars YouTube channel. Yes, that is an overexcited auto enthusiast ripping on a younger video blogger checking out his first press car. However, that overexcited auto enthusiast is Tiff Needell, a veteran TV car show host and race car driver, as well as a U.K. national treasure. If you’re going to take two Aston Martins out for a drive and some comparison, he’s the man to join you.

Needell might not be convinced about the style of the current DB11, but it has not strayed too far from the traditional style that defines an Aston Martin. At least not enough to alienate people. The new ultra-sharp edged aesthetic of the Vantage did cause some controversy when they dropped the first pictures though. But, as Needell’s co-presenter points out, they are different cars that share a design language, and are instantly identifiable as Aston Martins.

Naturally, Needell is excited about getting to the Aston Martin duo for a head-head race. After all, this is a man who once crashed his lawn mower trying to beat his own record for mowing his own lawn. But first, they have to get there. And predictably, there’s not a lot to objectively criticize with either car out on the road. Also predictably, they’re both keener on the more hard-edged Vantage.

‘The Vantage is a lighter, friskier, shorter-wheelbase chassis. It puts a smile on my face…What a stunning car.’

“The new V8 Vantage – although, we must not call it a V8 Vantage because they’re pretending there’ll never be a V12 Vantage – so, the ‘Vantage’ is a lighter, friskier, shorter-wheelbase chassis,” says Needell. “It puts a smile on my face…What a stunning car.”

We’ll warn you now though, they’re not actually heading to the track to race the Astons together, and we already know the Vantage is going to be the faster car. The DB11 is definitely more about reveling in the experience of a road trip with a wide smile, whereas the Vantage is for getting there quickly and with a big grin.
