Details Behind Modified Bugatti Chiron Hitting 300+ MPH
Although not confirmed, this new Chiron prototype is most likely to be the new Super Sport 300+.
Most of us have heard “200+ MPH top speed” as a selling point for many modern cars. For a couple of decades, this number seemed to be coveted as the peak of performance for the majority of automotive fans. Few cars have been capable of reaching this benchmark even in today’s crazy high horsepower landscape. While power isn’t everything, its definitely a selling point for many automakers. When extreme is taken to the very edge, there is one automaker that is always present: Bugatti.
Consider the fact that the Chiron currently has somewhere in the range of 1400 horsepower. Koenigsegg set the new bar recently with one of their cars going 284 MPH. However, Bugatti had their eyes on a much bigger prize: 300+ MPH. How did they manage to achieve this figure? Thanks to DriveTribe on YouTube, we are able to take a closer look into the details.

Consider the fact that the original Chiron was electronically limited to around 260 MPH. That means that Bugatti managed to get around 40 MPH on the table with some modifications. While the black and orange paint job which pays homage to the original Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is definitely cool, we don’t think it was the key factor. For this prototype model, the rear wing, passenger seat, and a lot of electronic devices were removed to save weight on the car. In addition, the length of the car has increased slightly in order to reduce unwanted aerodynamic drag.

This car also now makes 1578 HP over the standard 1,479 HP, as if the original amount wasn’t outstanding enough. However, the modification keeping the Chiron safe and glued to the road is the tires. These Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires are custom made and have extra reinforcement to keep up with the heat-build up and increased speed. The coolest feature of this prototype is definitely the laser-guided ride height, which uses sensors to detect any imperfections in the road and adjust the suspension accordingly.

While this prototype won’t be exactly the same as the production car, it seems that the new Super Sport 300+ will be based on both on it and the Centodieci, which was recently displayed as well. There will only be 30 examples of the new SS and it will cost a hefty $3.9 million. Interested? Hopefully your pockets are as interested as you are by the time 2021 rolls around!
