Drop-Top Nissan GT-R: Who Actually Wants This?

I enjoy giving credit when its due, especially when people come up with crazy stuff like this. But this intriguing project did have my scratching my head in quintessential bewilderment. Who would buy this?

Disclaimer: The drop-top Nissan GT-R is not official, or real, yet. It’s the result of Newport Convertible Engineering‘s tendency to go Sleepy Hollow on anything from Range Rovers to Porsche Cayennes.

It’s a tricky endeavor, what this team does. They’ve built an entire business on custom one-off projects by lopping the heads off cars that really have no business being convertibles. Novel and unique, yes, but still insane. Personally, no other car in their lineup invokes that feeling stronger for me than this rag top GTR.

The legendary GT-R encompasses everything outside the convertible mantra, especially the cloth top varieties. Cloth convertibles lose structural integrity, resulting in a sloppy road manners and often require chassis reinforcement (and extra weight) for reinforcement.

To me, a buyer looking at the 3.8L 545bhp TT V6 GT-R would be looking for anything but a convertible. Hell, they’d probably be the kind of customer that might have considered an AC delete option to shave off a few extra pounds for the track.

It’s a travesty. A blasphemous affront to everything the GT-R stands for. I will admit though, it’s not too terrible looking. The company has announced its plans to produce a limited run of these convertible GT-R’s, for sale worldwide. No further details at this time.
