E63, RS7 & GT-R: A Real Clash of the Titans

By -

Did you ever think luxury sport-sedans could outrun the mythical, Japanese video-game-inspired supercar?

Some folks out there feel like drag races don’t say much about a vehicle’s overall performance. While there’s some truth to that, it’s also fair to say that modern technology has made drag racing even more relevant due to several new inventions. What exactly are we talking about? Launch control.

Nowadays you can even get into a $35,000 hot hatch with launch control. Simply put the vehicle in gear, hold the brake, mash the throttle, release the brake, and hang on for dear life. When this system debuted with the Nissan GT-R, only a handful of the world’s most hardcore supercars had it, and that was it. Because of it, a wide range of vehicles, including sedans, are now able to rocket from 0-60 in ridiculously low times.

As this short-but-sweet video by the folks at Top Gear show, behemoths like the Audi RS7 and Mercedes-AMG E63 can utilize this technology to compete with hardcore sports cars like the Nissan GT-R. Despite the Nissan being the least powerful of the bunch, it manages to make the most with the least and deliver an incredible run. After all, 562 horsepower isn’t exactly “little” by any definition.

The German super-sedans pack a bit more in terms of power, but also carry more weight. The Audi RS7 pumps a mind-blowing 597 horsepower, while the E63 AMG boggles the mind with a mighty 603 ponies.
While this may not dictate which one of the trio is the best performer, because two of the three cars fulfill a completely different genre, to begin with, it does show us how technology like launch control can make the biggest and heaviest of sedans stupefyingly quick.
Who do you think will take the win?
