Great Racing for TUSCC at Virginia International
The races at Virginia International Raceway followed a slightly different format than usual. The Prototype class took the weekend off and the Prototype Challenge class took to the track on both Saturday and Sunday, running 45 minute heat races each day.
The GTLM and GTD classes ran together for a full race Sunday. To speed things along, I’ll just give you a breakdown of the top finishers overall for the weekend.
In PC 8Star Motorsports dominated the weekend, winning both heat races. The No. 25 8Star car of Luis Diaz and Sean Rayhall set the pace for the field of ORECA FLM09s. The second best team of the weekend was the No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports car of James French and David Ostella finishing third and fifth for the weekend.
Third was the championship leading CORE Autosport No. 54 of Jon Bennett and Colin Braun. The sensational weekend for 8Star brings them to within fourteen points of the championship leaders Braun and Bennett.
The GTLM class had about as exciting an ending as you could ask for. The No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 of Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer won a great late race battle with the No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR of Wolf Henzler and Bryan Sellers.
A late race caution setup the perfect scenario for the Ferrari-Porsche shootout. Coming home in third was the BMW Team RLL No. 56 Z4 GTE of Dirk Muller and John Edwards.
In GTD, the championship will come down to the last race now that the No. 94 Turner Motorsports BMW Z4 of Dane Cameron and Markus Palttala took the win, creating a three-way tie for the championship. The No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 of Alessandro Balzan and Jeff Westphal held on for a second place finish.
Getting their best finish of the year was the No. 27 Dempsey Racing Porsche 911 GT America driven by Patrick Dempsey and Andrew Davis.
The final round of the inaugural 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship will be September 19-20 at the Circuit of the Americas and will feature all four classes. The racing will be intense and championships will be decided.
