Video Series Profile - John Cena: Auto Geek

Strap in because this really is a thing: The Wrestling Superstar John Cena has a car show where he calls himself the Auto Geek.

Yes, the professional wrestler, rapper, actor and reality TV host has started a YouTube show about high-end cars and calls it John Cena: Auto Geek.

Video Series Profile - John Cena: Auto Geek

If you’re expecting a Florida based version of Jay Leno going full nerd, then you’ve set yourself up for disappointment. His series does feature a list of impressive cars, but very little real insight and lots of cliches. Plenty of things are “unmistakable,” and a lot are “indescribable.”

According to Cena, there’s a mode on a featured Lamborghini called Corsa, and it makes the exhaust sound even cooler. He tells us the Ferrari 599 is “what Corvette aspires to be,” and “the seats are fully racing seats but they are fully comfortable.”

The thing is, he is a genuine enthusiast. His muscle car collection is both well documented and extensive. He likes to daily drive his favorite piece of American muscle, a 1971 AMC Hornet SC/360. He also owns a 2006 Ford GT with a manual box, but without the racing stripes. However, Cena comes from a world where a companywide vocabulary-change initiative means WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) performers are now “superstars” and not  “wrestlers”. In his world, translating a guy that really likes and owns some expensive cars into the Auto Geek shouldn’t be a surprise.

Home for the series is a YouTube channel called The Bella Twins. They were a professional tag wrestling team, and their hook was being real-life twin sisters. This YouTube channel is an extension of their E! TV reality show. It’s made up of daily fashion, beauty, fitness, relationship, travel, and health videos.

Armed with that information, we aren’t expecting John Cena’s show to grow into something great. However, we will be taking a drink every time he tells us “this is where the magic happens.”

Ian Wright has been a professional writer for two years and is a regular contributor to Corvette Forum, Jaguar Forum, and 6SpeedOnline, among other auto sites.

His obsession with cars started young and has left him stranded miles off-road in Land Rovers, being lost far from home in hot hatches, going sideways in rallycross cars, being propelled forward in supercars and, more sensibly, standing in fields staring at classic cars. His first job was as a mechanic and then trained as a driving instructor before going into media production.

The automotive itch never left though, and he realized writing about cars is his true calling. However, that doesn’t stop him from also hosting the Both Hand Drive podcast.
