Lamborghini’s Aventador S Is A T-Rex On Four Wheels

If Lamborghini is going to build a dinosaur, it’d better be a scary one

Lamborghini’s V12 supercar has been on the market for more than 6 years, which feels like a lifetime when you’re trying to sell a four-hundred-thousand-dollar car. The fact that the car is still on the market is perhaps a testament to its staying power and Lamborghini’s ability to be continually developing this monster into something people consistently are willing to pay for. As old as this car is in the marketplace, the updated Aventador S brings that V12 dinosaur into the modern market with adjustable dampers (controlled by “Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva” switch), four wheel steering, and standard carbon-ceramic brakes.

In this video, PistonHeads Dan drives the ‘S’ around the track in pouring, bucketing, furious downpour rain. You can see a few moments where the car doesn’t feel like cooperating with grip on the wet track, and Dan is forced to take quick throttle and steering action. For the most part, though, Lamborghini has built on the Aventador’s well-known flaws to make the S a much better car than the one it replaces. First and foremost, the engineers have created a new higher-downforce front splitter and a redesigned air inlet for the front of the car to help promote front end grip. Many owners and reviewers were quick to point to the Aventador’s understeer tendencies as a flaw, so working to add more grip to the front all these years later is a smart move.

Among the pantheon of old-school big-displacement naturally-aspirated multi-cylinder supercars, Lamborghini essentially invented the concept. It is fitting then, that Lamborghini also produce what may be the final variant in the lineup. With hybrid supercars and turbochargers and technological whiz-bangery going on elsewhere, how long until Lambo is forced to do the same? Will the Aventador be the final V12-powered car to leave Sant’Agata Bolognese? If so, the Aventador S appears to be a damn good way to send it off.
