This Spacecamper is the modern, turbo VW bus that we’ve always wanted.

Someone in Germany has come up with something quite mad. It’s a most unique combination of two VW Group products. One is a VW bus, and the other is a Porsche 997 Turbo. The resulting creation has been deemed as the worlds fastest camper van.

Powering this Spacecamper monster is Porsche’s own twin-turbo flat-six engine, and with nearly 480 horsepower, this camper is able to hit speeds of nearly 165 miles per hour. So if you are late to a track day, and you forgot to book a hotel room, this ride is perfect for you.

As you’d expect, the cost is a bit steep, especially when you consider the means of propulsion. At just over $165,000 it is eye watering when you factor in that the same amount of money gets you into the turbo club… in a brand new 911-bodied version. But what the new turbo can’t do, this one sure can.

Touted as “suitable for every day use, this Spacecamper is not lacking in interior appointments. You still get a full interior, replete with leather seating, swivel front captains chairs and a mobile appliance center with a sink and stove-top. And you can fold everything flat for sleeping. Porsche may offer some exclusive models, but we have yet to see that on their options list.

While it’s still not quite legal under current US import laws, we hope this sort of thing built by TH Automobiles inspires other custom car builders, because vehicles this awesome are far too uncommon here. And if you are paying close attention to the photos, no, your eyes do not deceive you. You do hook it up to electric lines and add fuel from under the hood.
