Porsche Classic is hosting a Restoration Challenge for the first time in the U.S. 40 dealerships will return 40 sports cars to their former glory.

All Porsche cars should run forever. Sometimes an older car will go through a meticulous restoration. Other times, not so much. Porsche Classic is all about keeping older Porsche models on the road and looking and performing their best. They produce and supply over 60,000 genuine Porsche parts to ensure these legendary cars remain on the road. Now Porsche Classic is trying something a little bit different, with the Restoration Challenge.

The United States is home to more classic Porsche sports cars than any other market in the world. So, the gauntlet has been thrown down to 40 different dealers across the U.S. They are each to acquire a classic Porsche that needs expert technical attention to get it back on the road. Each vehicle is to undergo a restoration at the hands of Porsche-trained technicians.

The Restoration Challenge will run until mid-August. At that time one winner will be selected from three areas of the country: East, South-Central and West. The three cars selected will move on to the finals. An overall winner will be selected in September.

The cars are to be judged along the way by a panel of experts from Porsche Cars North America, Inc. They will be judged not only on the quality of the restoration but also on the documentation such as the Porsche Classic Technical Certificate.

The cars being restored run the gamut of the Porsche range. The oldest is a 1956 356 and the newest is a 2005 Carrera GT. How anyone can let a Carrera GT fall into disrepair is a mystery, but there it is.

In between there are cars such as a first-generation Boxster and 1988 911 Turbo “slantnose.” All these cars deserve to be back on the road and in tip top shape. This Restoration Challenge should certainly achieve that.

The competition between the dealers will be fierce. Being judged as the overall Restoration Challenge winner will be quite the feather in the dealership cap. All cars will most certainly be finished to a high standard, and in far better shape than where they began. Many folks will have their favorite dealerships that they will be rooting for.

For me, I will be pulling for Porsche of The Mainline in Newtown Square, PA. I purchased my 2016 Cayman S from them, new off the showroom floor. Last year, I picked up my 40 Jahre 911 from them as well.

They will be restoring a 1961 Porsche 356 as part of the Restoration Challenge. It will be exciting to see how the car looks when it is finished in a couple of months.

You can follow the all the action along the way by following #porscherestorationchallenge21 on social media. There will surely be some shocking transformations. What has not been announced yet is where these cars will be headed after the challenge.

Will each dealership be selling them? Are they going to be headed to a museum? It is not clear at this time, but we do know that by September there will be 40 more amazing classic Porsche sports cars living the good life. Let us know your favorite on the 6SpeedOnline forums.
