Typically auto manufacturers don’t get involved in the business of restoring their own vehicles, but every now and then comes a long a special model they can’t refuse to bring back to its original glory.

This 1972 Porsche 911 2.5 S/T is one of those cars. The class winner at Le Mans in 1972 has been restored by the Porsche Classic experts over the past two years and will now be presented for the first time at the Techno Classica in Essen, one of the largest Porsche gatherings in the world.

The original condition of the car quite poor, and it certainly proved a challenge for even the best in the business. This famed Porsche saw action at several races in the USA and at the endurance world championship during the 1972 season. One of the drivers back then was Jürgen Barth, a Porsche factory driver and an employee of the sports division of Porsche.

The barn find was performed by an “important” Porsche collector in the United States, and when the full pedigree of the vehicle was uncovered, Porsche decided to perform the restoration, making this one of the few customer vehicles ever certified by the German manufacturer.

With the value of classic sports cars massively on the rise, companies like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Jaguar have jumped in the business of restoring customer cars, which has proved to be extremely lucrative.
