Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Battles Carrera 993 at Nürburgring Nordschleife

Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport throws down at the Nordschleife.

And we have the best view in the house: chase cam. Of course, our chase cam car is the real hero here. The driver of this modified 993 Carrera drives white-knuckled around the ‘Ring chasing the very fast, and very capable Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Sandro Ziegler, the driver of the 993, states that the only way he was able to contend with the GT4 Clubsport was thanks to traffic which prevented the new Porsche to dust its elder. Still, his performance was a noble effort, and a lot of fun to watch. Ziegler has no qualms shouting and grunting when he botches a corner or loses time. The frenetic driving style with which he drives is also quite a treat. As Ferry Porsche once said “Porsches are meant to be driven, no polished.”

In the areas where the Nordschleife opens up the GT4 CS can be seen pulling away. That is the power of power. Though, the 993 is no slouch, having been modified for track work. 50 kilos (110lbs) of weigh reduction, a wicked exhaust setup for a bit more power, OZ wheels with track day rubber and upgraded brakes make for a fantastic track day weapon.

Seeing the GT4 CS run the ‘Ring is delightful, but I can’t get over the 993. Personally, I find 993’s one of the least visually-appealing 911 models. However, it is impossible to deny the raw character of the car. The flat six howl and rowdy induction note is just so visceral. That the driver is working as hard as he is to hustle the car is just part of the charm. Sawing at the wheel, plentiful counter steer, the whole thing just makes a track day junkie like me a bit teary-eyed. Please excuse me, I’m off to check my track day calendar.
