Porsche Macan to be First 4 Cylinder Porsche Since the 968

Well, it looks like the Macan won’t be available in just the Macan S and Macan Turbo trims. According to recent reports, Porsche will eventually offer the car with a four cylinder as well. Interesting, right?

This would be the first Porsche with a four banger since they stopped building the 968 in 1995. Whether or not that means that Porsche is willing to further move down market with future models seems unlikely, but it still a big change for the company. The Macan S is already set to be their least expensive, most accessible car yet. I anticipate that a four-cylinder will be even cheaper. More and more Porsche is looking like a full-range auto manufacturer.

Of course, this is all still conjecture. We know that they’re building one, but we don’t know any more details than that. Will it be a hybrid? Will it be turbocharged? Will it be diesel? Will it be a turbocharged diesel hybrid? That all depends on where Porsche is looking to take the Macan.

The WhatCar article suggests that the four-cylinder configuration could proliferate throughout the Porsche model like with this car being the first, and possibly, the only. Still though… The thought of a turbo-four Cayman is absolutely enticing. It would basically be a mid-engine FR-S. Who doesn’t want that? Any way you look at it, Porsche’s future just got a lot more interesting.
